FIDE Test Preparation in Switzerland – A1, A2 and B1

The FIDE test is the official Swiss language certification required by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) for residence permits, permit renewals, and Swiss naturalisation. It is mandatory for non-Swiss residents living in French-speaking Switzerland — including Geneva, Lausanne, and the canton de Vaud.

At French via Skype, we offer personalised one-to-one FIDE preparation courses online, from A1 to B1, tailored to your level, your administrative requirements, and your timeline.

These courses also provide a solid foundation for those preparing for the Swiss Naturalisation Interview.

All of our students have successfully passed their FIDE test with excellent results — and many who prepared for A2 went on to achieve B1.

FIDE Test – Levels and Immigration Requirements

Each level assesses practical language skills — speaking, listening, reading, and writing — needed for everyday, professional, and administrative life. Our preparation focuses on the requirements specific to your level, helping you meet official criteria with confidence.

Typical FIDE requirements:

  • A1 / A2 – Required for certain residence permits or renewals
  • B1 – Required for Swiss naturalisation
  • All levels – Support effective communication and integration in daily life

Our tailored FIDE courses prepare you for the exam while strengthening the language skills essential for successful integration in French-speaking Switzerland.

FIDE Test – Understanding the Test Format

The FIDE test evaluates your ability to communicate in French in real-life situations in Switzerland. It consists of two separate parts, which can be taken together or independently:

Oral part — Speaking and Listening(CHF 170)

The oral part lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes a listening comprehension exercise and a spoken interaction with an examiner. You will be asked to discuss everyday situations such as work, appointments, or interactions with local authorities.

Written part — Reading and Writing (CHF 120)

Written part — Reading and Writing (CHF 120) The written part lasts approximately 60 minutes and includes reading comprehension exercises and short writing tasks based on practical documents such as forms, emails, and notices used in daily life in Switzerland.

The test is available at three levels: A1, A2, and B1. The level is not chosen in advance — the examiner assesses your skills during the test and awards the level that corresponds to your performance.

The complete FIDE test costs CHF 250. Results are sent by post approximately four weeks after the test date.

FIDE Test – Build Your Skills and Exam Readiness

Our FIDE preparation courses help you develop practical French while becoming familiar with the test format and expectations.

The FIDE test assesses four key skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Preparation includes realistic tasks and exam-focused practice:

  • Listening: Understanding everyday conversations and instructions
  • Reading: Working with emails, forms, notices, and short texts
  • Writing: Completing forms and writing clear, simple messages
  • Speaking: Practising role-plays and guided conversations
  • Exam strategies: Managing time and responding effectively
  • Personalised feedback: Targeted corrections to support progress

This structured approach prepares you for the FIDE test while strengthening the French skills needed for daily and professional life.

Frequently Asked Questions — FIDE Test Preparation

What is the FIDE test and who needs to take it in Switzerland?

The FIDE test is the official Swiss language certification recognised by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). It is required for non-Swiss residents in French-speaking Switzerland who are applying for a residence permit, renewing a B or C permit, or applying for Swiss naturalisation. The test evaluates practical French skills in everyday situations — at work, at the commune, and in daily life.

What level do I need for my permit or naturalisation in Switzerland?

The required FIDE level depends on your specific administrative situation. A1 or A2 is generally required for certain residence permits or permit renewals, while B1 is required for Swiss naturalisation. We recommend confirming the exact level required with your commune or cantonal authorities before starting your preparation.

How much does the FIDE test cost?

The FIDE test costs CHF 250 for the complete test (oral and written). The oral part alone costs CHF 170, and the written part alone costs CHF 120. These fees are set by the official Swiss examination centres and apply across French-speaking Switzerland, including Geneva, Lausanne, and the canton de Vaud.

How long does it take to prepare for the FIDE test?

Preparation time depends on your current level of French and the FIDE level required for your administrative situation. With focused one-to-one lessons, most learners make significant progress within a few weeks. We begin with an introductory assessment lesson to evaluate your level and plan your preparation around your administrative deadlines.

What is the difference between Module 1 and Module 2?

Module 1 is an accelerated preparation of 5 classes of 45 minutes, ideal for candidates who already have a good foundation and need focused practice — particularly for the oral component. Module 2 is a more comprehensive preparation of 5 classes of 60 minutes, covering all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Both modules are fully personalised and include all materials.

Why choose one-to-one FIDE preparation rather than a group course?

Unlike group courses, our one-to-one preparation focuses entirely on your level, your weaknesses, and your specific FIDE requirements. You progress faster, receive personalised feedback, and build the confidence needed to succeed on exam day — particularly for the oral component, which many candidates find most challenging. All of our students have successfully passed their FIDE test, with many who prepared for A2 going on to achieve B1.
