IB French Tuition — Frequently Asked Questions
Is IB French hard?
IB French is demanding, but very achievable with the right preparation. The main challenges are the oral exam, the written tasks, and the breadth of vocabulary required across the five global themes. Most students see significant improvement with consistent, personalised tutoring — many of ours have achieved grade 7.
What is the difference between IB French Ab Initio, SL, and HL?
Ab Initio is for complete beginners. Standard Level (SL) is for students with some prior French. Higher Level (HL) is for advanced students who also study literary texts and produce more complex written and oral responses. All three levels include listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
What are the IB French global themes?
The IB French curriculum is organised around five global themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation, and sharing the planet. Students must be able to discuss and write about these topics with fluency and precision in both the written and oral exams.
How is the IB French oral exam assessed?
The individual oral is worth 25% of the final grade at SL and HL. Students present and discuss an extract from a literary work (HL) or a visual stimulus (SL and Ab Initio), followed by a conversation with the examiner. It is assessed on language, communication, and the ability to develop ideas. Read our full guide on IB French oral exam preparation.
How early should I start IB French tutoring?
Ideally, as early as possible — at the start of Year 11 or even Year 10 for Ab Initio students. However, we also work with students who come to us a few weeks before their exams and need intensive, targeted preparation. An introductory session helps us assess the level and identify the most effective approach whatever the timeline.
What grammar do I need for IB French?
At IB level, students need a solid command of tenses (passé composé, imparfait, futur, conditionnel), the subjunctive, relative clauses, and a range of complex connectors. We work on all these points systematically and in the context of IB themes. See our full guide: What grammar do I need for IB French?
How many sessions do I need to improve my IB French grade?
This depends on the student's starting level, timeline, and goals. Some students see significant improvement after just 5 sessions focused on specific weaknesses. Others benefit from ongoing support throughout the two-year IB programme. We design a personalised study plan after the introductory class to give you a realistic picture.
Are lessons available during school holidays and exam periods?
Yes — we are available all year, including school holidays and evenings. This is particularly useful for intensive preparation in the weeks leading up to IB French exams.
