DELF B2 Grammar – What Is Expected
The DELF B2 exam requires a high degree of linguistic independence and grammatical accuracy.
Many learners ask, “Is DELF B2 difficult?”
While certain advanced structures — such as the subjunctive, verbal prepositions, and complex connectors — may seem challenging, they can be mastered with regular practice and targeted training, learners can develop the precision and fluency required to succeed at B2 level.
Here is the list of the 10 essential points of DELF B2 grammar that you must master!
- 1. Present subjunctive :
Use of the present subjunctive to express will, doubt, wish, etc.
Ex : “Selon moi, il faudrait que nous nous adaptions à ce changements.”
- 2. Past subjunctive :
Use of the past subjunctive to express actions prior to a given time.
Ex : “Il est ravi qu’elle soit venue lui rendre visite.”
- 3. Concordance of tenses :
Correct use of verb tenses in complex sentences, and subordinate clauses.
Ex : “Quand je suis arrivé(e), elles étaient déjà parties.” (Passé composé, plus que parfait).
- 4. Compound relative pronouns :
Use of compound relative pronouns like “which”, “of which”, “to which” to link sentences.
Ex : “La ville dans laquelle j’ai grandi était de taille humaine.”
- 5. Demonstrative pronouns :
Distinction between “this” and the demonstrative pronouns “this” and “that” in specific contexts.
Ex : “Cela est fort intéressant.”
- 6. Verbal prepositions :
Use of complex prepositions, especially those associated with certain verbs.
Ex : “Nous réussissons à l’examen / Que pensez-vous de la situation ? / Je pense à eux.”
- 7. Conjunctive conjunctions :
Using conjunctive conjunctions to connect ideas in complex sentences.
Ex : “Bien qu’il fasse froid dehors, je vais sortir pendre l’air.”
- 8. The conditional mode :
Correct use of the present and past conditional to express a hypothetical action.
Ex : “Si j'avais de l'argent, je voyagerais / Si j’avais su, je ne serais pas venu(e).”
- 9. Idiomatic expressions:
Familiarity with idiomatic expressions and their correct use in appropriate contexts.
Ex : “C'est la goutte d'eau qui fait déborder le vase.” (It's the last straw that breaks the camel's back).
“Mettre les pieds dans le plat.” (To put one's foot in it; to say or do something tactless or embarrassing).
- 10. Logical connectors :
To connect ideas and structure the speech coherently.
Ex: “Il est ouvert d’esprit tandis qu’elle demeure fermée à toutes propositions / En outre, je voudrais ajouter…”
