What Our IB Students in Luxembourg Say

"We are very grateful for the support our son received from Laure. He initially struggled with speaking and lacked confidence, but through consistent, focused sessions, his skills and self-assurance improved significantly. Thanks to Laure's guidance, he achieved a 7 in his speaking assessment — a result we are incredibly proud of. We highly recommend Laure to any student needing support in IB French."

Marina Spilevic — parent of David, IB Student, Luxembourg

"I have studied French for eleven years but only started classes with Laure three years ago. She has been the most key to the improvement of both my academic and conversational French. I first looked into Laure to guide me through French in the IB as it is quite rigorous and academic. Since then, my writing, speaking, reading and listening skills have majorly advanced. Even though I have graduated, I continue my classes with Laure — it is always the highlight of my week."

Audrey Stewart — Medical Student

"I started tutoring with Laure at the start of year 11 and I can honestly say that I would not have done nearly as well with IB French without her. She is knowledgeable, organised and she always pushes her students to be better. It was her guidance and teaching that allowed me to feel truly confident with the French language."

Matthew Rassias — Engineering Student

"I started having lessons with Laure in January as I was having some difficulties at school with my IB French. Our lessons considerably improved my marks and my comprehension of the language. We worked on vocabulary, grammar and did a lot of exercises. All of that helped me to achieve really good marks and I successfully passed my French IB exams."

IB schools in Luxembourg — where our students come from

We work with IB students from all of Luxembourg's main international schools offering the IB Diploma Programme:

Each school has its own approach to IB French — different text choices, different oral preparation requirements, different timelines. We align our preparation with your school's specific curriculum and, where helpful, coordinate with your school teacher to ensure full consistency.

Your IB French Tutor — Luxembourg and Beyond

Your IB French preparation is guided by an experienced native French tutor with over 20 years of international teaching experience. She has supported IB students across Europe and internationally — in Luxembourg, Brussels, London, Sydney, Melbourne and beyond — and has a thorough understanding of the IB French curriculum at all levels: Ab Initio, SL and HL.

She is deeply familiar with the curriculum of Luxembourg's main international schools — including ISL, OTR, the Waldorf School, and the Athénée de Luxembourg — and adapts her preparation to each school's specific requirements, text choices, and exam timeline. Where relevant, she works closely with students' school teachers to ensure full alignment between in-class and private preparation.

She knows exactly what examiners look for and how to help students reach their full potential — whether at Ab Initio, SL or HL level.

IB French Tutor Luxembourg — What Our Lessons Cover

Our IB French lessons in Luxembourg are structured around the specific requirements of the IB exam — not generic French teaching. Every session is adapted to your current level, your exam date, and the areas where you need the most work.

Individual Oral (IO) — the most important component

The Individual Oral is often the most stressful part of the IB French exam — and the one where targeted preparation makes the biggest difference. It counts for 25% of your final grade at all levels.

The format differs by level:

  • Ab Initio — you are shown a visual stimulus (a photograph or image) related to one of the five course themes. You describe and discuss what you see, then answer the examiner's questions.
  • SL — you present and discuss a visual image connected to one of the IB themes. The oral lasts approximately 12–15 minutes, including a presentation phase and a discussion with the examiner.
  • HL — you work from a literary text extract. You present your analysis, then discuss the themes with the examiner. Preparation time is 20 minutes; the recorded assessment lasts 12–15 minutes.

We work on:

  • Describing and analysing your visual or literary stimulus effectively
  • Building a structured, confident oral presentation
  • Anticipating and handling the examiner's follow-up questions
  • Fluency, pronunciation, and natural expression under exam conditions
  • Mock oral sessions with detailed feedback

What a strong Individual Oral looks like — SL example

The examiner shows you an image and asks: "Décrivez cette image et expliquez en quoi elle illustre l'un des thèmes du cours."

✓ Strong answer:
"Sur cette image, je vois un groupe de jeunes de différentes origines qui travaillent ensemble autour d'une table. Cela m'évoque le thème de l'organisation sociale et de l'identité culturelle. Ce qui m'a frappée, c'est la diversité visible dans le groupe — on voit des personnes de cultures différentes qui collaborent, ce qui reflète une réalité de plus en plus courante dans des villes cosmopolites comme Luxembourg. Pour moi, cette image illustre bien les défis et les richesses d'une société multiculturelle."

✗ Too weak — avoid this:
"Je vois des jeunes. Ils sont dans une salle. Ils travaillent." — no analysis, no connection to a theme, no personal observation.

Tip: Always connect the image to one of the five IB themes, use specific details from what you see, and add a personal or cultural observation. Examiners reward students who go beyond basic description and show genuine engagement with the theme.

Written Production

  • Guided writing practice across all text types — essays, letters, articles, reports, speeches
  • Vocabulary and grammar for academic writing at SL and HL level
  • Structural techniques for coherent, well-argued written responses — including si clauses and opinion expressions
  • Correction and feedback on school assignments and practice papers

Listening and Reading Comprehension

The Five IB Themes

All preparation covers the five themes of the IB Language B curriculum:

  • Identities
  • Experiences
  • Human Ingenuity
  • Social Organisation
  • Sharing the Planet

For each theme, we develop targeted vocabulary, key structures, and model answers that students can adapt to any question.

How IB French Tuition Works — Luxembourg

All lessons take place online via Zoom or Teams — from the comfort of your home or study space in Luxembourg, without travel, at times that fit around school and extracurricular commitments.

Every student begins with an assessment of their current level and a review of their specific IB requirements — level, exam date, areas of weakness. From there, we design a preparation plan adapted to their needs. Preparation includes work with authentic IB French past papers to familiarise students with the real exam format.

After every session, a lesson summary is sent by email — including vocabulary, grammar points, and homework to consolidate what was covered.

Lessons are available throughout the year, including during school holidays and in the weeks immediately before exams.

IB French in Luxembourg — A Unique Context

Luxembourg is one of the few countries in the world where French is an official language alongside German and Luxembourgish. For IB students in Luxembourg, this creates both an advantage and a challenge: French is everywhere, but academic French for the IB requires a very specific set of skills that everyday exposure alone cannot develop.

Unlike tutoring platforms that match you with a different tutor for each subject, you work exclusively with the same native French tutor throughout your entire IB preparation — adapted entirely to your level, your school's requirements, and your exam date.

IB French Tutor Luxembourg — Frequently Asked Questions

Which IB schools in Luxembourg teach French B, and do you work with their curriculum?

All of Luxembourg's main IB schools offer French as part of their IB Diploma Programme — ISL, OTR, the Waldorf School, the Athénée de Luxembourg, Lycée Technique du Centre and Lycée Mathias Adam. We work with students from all these schools and align our preparation with each school's specific curriculum, text choices and exam timeline. Where helpful, we can coordinate directly with your school teacher.

Is French compulsory for IB students in Luxembourg?

At most IB schools in Luxembourg, students must study at least one language B in addition to their first language. Given that French is an official language of Luxembourg, it is often the natural — and sometimes compulsory — choice for Language B. The level required (Ab Initio, SL or HL) depends on the student's prior experience of French.

What is the difference between IB French Ab Initio, SL and HL?

Ab Initio is designed for students with no prior experience of French — it focuses on foundational language skills and everyday communication. Standard Level (SL) is for students with some French background and requires a broader range of skills. Higher Level (HL) demands the deepest level of linguistic and cultural understanding, including analysis of literary and non-literary texts. We prepare students at all three levels.

How do I prepare for the IB French Individual Oral in Luxembourg?

The Individual Oral requires you to present and discuss two extracts — one literary and one non-literary — connected by a global issue. Preparation involves choosing effective extracts, building a structured presentation, practising fluent spoken French under timed conditions, and learning to handle follow-up questions confidently. We run mock oral sessions with detailed feedback to simulate the real exam experience.

When should I start IB French tutoring in Luxembourg?

Ideally at the beginning of Year 11 or 12 — the earlier you start, the more time you have to build vocabulary, consolidate grammar, and practise exam techniques. That said, targeted preparation in the months immediately before the exam can also make a significant difference, particularly for the Individual Oral.

Can a private IB French tutor help if I am already doing well at school?

Yes — many of our students are already performing at a good level and come to us to push from a 5 or 6 to a 7. A private tutor provides focused attention on the specific areas that will make the difference at the highest level — often oral fluency, the quality of written arguments, and exam technique.

Are the lessons online or in person in Luxembourg?

All lessons are delivered online via Zoom or Teams. This allows flexible scheduling around school timetables and extracurricular activities, and means students can have lessons from home at any time of year — including during exam preparation periods and school holidays.

What results have your IB French students in Luxembourg achieved?

One of our Luxembourg students recently achieved a 7 in his IB French speaking assessment after struggling with confidence at the start of his preparation. Our students across Europe and internationally have consistently improved their oral and written performance through targeted private tuition.
