IB French SL — Insights from Our Tutor

Many students underestimate how strategic IB French SL can be. Success doesn't just depend on language ability — it requires knowing how the IB evaluates communication, structure, and cultural understanding. We teach you how to think like an IB examiner:

  • Decode command terms like analysez, justifiez, or commentez
  • Organise your ideas clearly for maximum impact
  • Express complex ideas naturally, with the right tone and vocabulary

We also integrate proven IB study strategies — timed oral rehearsals, structured essay plans, and targeted vocabulary lists for each IB theme. Combined with the flexibility of online learning, this ensures steady progress, less stress, and full readiness for the final exams.

  • Students aiming to excel across all areas — writing, oral, listening, and reading

What Students Say About Our IB French SL Tutoring

"I started having lessons with Laure in January 2016 as I was having some difficulties at school with my IB French. Our lessons considerably improved my marks and my comprehension of the language. Each lesson, we worked on vocabulary, grammar and we did a lot of exercises too (dictation, writing and comprehension), all of that helped me to achieve some really good marks and I successfully passed my French IB exams at the end of the year! I really enjoyed our lessons and would like to recommend Laure to other students who need support with their French."

Lea Kroot — IB French SL student, Brussels

"Laure has been an exceptional support for my daughter's IB French. She has been thorough, attentive with quality of learning at the core of her work. My daughter looked forward to every class and enjoyed working with Laure. We were delighted to receive higher results than what we were expecting and now my daughter feels confident with her French for the next part of her life!"

Saba Bebawi for her daughter Sia — IB French SL student, Melbourne

"I had the privilege of working with Laure to prepare for my IB SL exams during year 11 and 12, she helped me a lot, without her I would not have been able to achieve this result. She showed great patience and pushed and encouraged me in each of her classes. Laure is perfectly familiar with the IB program and the expectations of the final exams. She took the time to have me regularly repeat the vocabulary of the themes covered in class, she explained the grammar in a clear and structured way so that I could integrate it into my written tasks. She brought me many resources and in particular many previous papers with which I practiced, in particular oral production for which I had a lot of apprehension. In the end, I'm really happy with my overall mark! Thank you Laure!"

Patrick Tan — IB French SL student, Melbourne

"We are very grateful for the support our son received from Laure. He initially struggled with speaking and lacked confidence, but through consistent, focused sessions, his skills and self-assurance improved significantly. Thanks to Laure's guidance, he achieved a 7 in his speaking assessment, a result we're incredibly proud of. We highly recommend Laure to any student needing support in IB French."

Marina Spilevic for David — IB French SL student, Luxembourg

"I have studied French for an overall of 11 years but only started classes with Laure 3 years ago, and can say as someone who's had multiple French teachers prior, that she has been the most key to the improvement of both my academic and conversational French. I first looked into Laure to guide me through French in the IB as it is quite rigorous and academic which I had not encountered before. Since then, we have done a range of activities, from practising speaking about topics which could come up in my speaking exams, to exercising my academic French by writing debates, letters and dissertations. As someone who is an introvert, I was very shy when first starting my classes with Laure especially as I had never had a native French teacher before. I still remember my first class with Laure where, instead, she was incredibly patient, warm and supportive. Since then, my writing, speaking, reading and listening skills have majorly advanced. Even though I have graduated, I continue my classes with Laure to allow me to ease back into conversational French which is always the highlight of my week."

Audrey Stewart — IB French SL student, Sydney

"I didn't really like French at first and my grades were not good. Laure made the lessons fun and helped me practice for my IB French SL exams. She was really patient and explained everything clearly. I feel more confident now and my marks are much better. Thank you Laure!"

IB French SL Tutoring — Frequently Asked Questions

What is IB French SL and how is it different from HL?

IB French Standard Level (SL) requires students to demonstrate competence across four skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — at an intermediate to upper-intermediate level. Compared to Higher Level (HL), SL does not require the study of literary texts and the written tasks are generally shorter. However, the oral exam and the global themes are the same at both levels.

What is the IB French SL Individual Oral and how is it assessed?

The Individual Oral (IO) is worth 25% of the final SL grade. Students analyse a visual stimulus linked to one of the five global themes, present their ideas for approximately 3–4 minutes, then engage in a discussion with the examiner for around 5 minutes. It is assessed on language, communication, and the ability to develop and support ideas. Read our full guide on IB French oral exam preparation.

What is Paper 2 in IB French SL?

Paper 2 is the written production paper. Students choose one task from a selection of prompts linked to the five IB global themes and write a text of 250–400 words in an appropriate format — letter, article, essay, or blog post. It is assessed on content, language, and format. Read our full guide: How to ace IB French Paper 2.

What are the five IB French SL global themes?

The five global themes are: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation, and sharing the planet. All written and oral tasks are linked to one of these themes. Building strong vocabulary around each theme is essential for exam success.

How do I improve my IB French SL grade?

The most effective strategies are: practising past papers under timed conditions, building theme-specific vocabulary, working on oral fluency with regular speaking practice, and receiving detailed feedback on written tasks. Understanding exactly how the IB marks each component is also essential — our tutor covers all of this in a structured, personalised way.

Can you help with the IB French SL Internal Assessment (IA)?

Yes — we provide full support for the IA, from choosing a suitable topic and planning your approach to drafting, revising, and refining your final piece. The IA is an important part of your final grade and benefits significantly from expert guidance.

How many tutoring sessions do I need for IB French SL?

This depends on your current level and how much time you have before your exams. Some students join us for a focused block of 5–10 sessions targeting specific weaknesses. Others work with us consistently throughout Year 11 and 12 for full programme support. An introductory session at frenchviaskype.com allows us to assess your level and design the right plan for you.
