Bonjour!
Kambala School is one of Sydney's most distinguished girls' schools — an Anglican independent school in Rose Bay, founded in 1887, consistently ranked among the top non-selective girls' schools in New South Wales. Since becoming an authorised IB World School in 2010, Kambala has offered its students a genuinely international pathway alongside the HSC — making it one of the very few girls' schools in NSW to offer both.
We have worked closely with Kambala School students since 2011 — the year the IB Diploma Programme was introduced at the school. Many of our Kambala students achieve grade 7 in their final IB French exams. Two of our Kambala students share their experience in the testimonials below.

IB French at Kambala School — What Students Need to Know
At Kambala, IB French is offered as French B at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). French is not offered as Ab Initio at Kambala — which means students entering the IB French programme are expected to have a solid prior foundation in the language.
This creates a specific challenge: many Kambala girls have studied French from an early age — Kambala introduces French in the junior school alongside Latin and Mandarin — and arrive in Year 11 with a good vocabulary base. However, the shift from conversational or classroom French to the analytical, communicative demands of the IB is significant. The Individual Oral, written tasks, and Paper 2 comprehension all require a level of precision, register awareness, and spontaneous fluency that many students have not yet developed.
Our tutoring is designed precisely for this transition — helping Kambala students bridge the gap between the French they already know and the French the IB examiner expects to hear and read.
Kambala's IB Diploma also includes mandatory core requirements: the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Action and Service (CAS). For students writing their Extended Essay in French, we provide dedicated support — from topic selection and research strategy to language accuracy and literary analysis.
Teaching IB French to Kambala Girls — Our Approach
Kambala's educational philosophy centres on developing confident, intellectually curious young women — students who are encouraged to take intellectual risks, speak with authority, and engage with global ideas. This philosophy aligns naturally with what the IB French programme demands: not just language accuracy, but the ability to express complex opinions, discuss global themes with nuance, and communicate authentically in French.
Our tutor has extensive experience working with students at single-sex girls' schools in Sydney and understands the specific dynamics of learning and confidence-building in this environment. Many Kambala girls are high achievers academically but feel particular anxiety about speaking French spontaneously — especially in front of a teacher or examiner. Our oral preparation focuses not only on language technique but also on building the kind of composure and confidence that allows students to perform at their best on exam day.
IB French Tutoring for Kambala Students — What We Cover
Individual Oral Preparation — French B SL and HL
The Individual Oral accounts for 25% of the final grade. We prepare Kambala students for all three parts: the photo presentation, follow-up questions on the image, and the general discussion on a second IB theme. We work on the 3-layer approach (describe, connect, analyse), theme-specific vocabulary, and strategies for handling unexpected examiner questions with confidence.
Written Tasks and Paper 1
All IB text types used in the Kambala French B programme — letters, articles, blog posts, speeches, diary entries — with focused attention on register, structure, and vocabulary. Every practice task receives detailed written feedback aligned with IB marking criteria.
Grammar and Accuracy
Systematic reinforcement of every grammar point required for IB French B — the subjunctive, conditional clauses, past tenses, relative pronouns, and complex connectors. Grammar is always taught in context — through IB-style tasks, not isolated exercises.
Reading and Listening Comprehension — Paper 2
Strategies for handling unfamiliar texts and authentic listening materials. Students learn to extract precise meaning efficiently and to structure their answers to comprehension questions accurately within the time constraints of the exam.
Past Papers and Exam Technique
Regular practice with IB French past papers under timed conditions. Students learn exactly what IB examiners reward — and what they penalise — so there are no surprises on exam day.
Extended Essay in French — HL Support
At Higher Level, some Kambala students choose to write their Extended Essay in French. We provide dedicated support for this component — from choosing a compelling topic and structuring the argument to ensuring language accuracy and sophistication throughout the 4,000-word essay.
French Language Debate and Discussion
Kambala's IB French programme includes coaching for French language debate — discussions on IB themes such as immigration, cultural diversity, environmental issues, and global citizenship. We prepare students for these discussions with targeted vocabulary, structured argument techniques, and spontaneous speaking practice.

What Kambala Students Say About Our IB French Tutoring
"I have studied French for an overall of 11 years but only started classes with Laure 3 years ago, and can say as someone who's had multiple French teachers prior, that she has been the most key to the improvement of both my academic and conversational French. I first looked into Laure to guide me through French in the IB as it is quite rigorous and academic which I had not encountered before. Since then, we have done a range of activities, from practicing speaking about topics which could come up in my speaking exams, to exercising my academic French by writing debates, letters and dissertations. As someone who is an introvert, I was very shy when first starting my classes with Laure especially as I had never had a native French teacher before and therefore assumed she had higher expectations. I still remember my first class with Laure where, instead, she was incredibly patient, warm and supportive. Since then, my writing, speaking, reading and listening skills have majorly advanced to which I've received comments from family, school teachers and even french-speaking friends concerning how much my French has improved! Even though I have graduated, I continue my classes with Laure to allow me to ease back into conversational French which is always the highlight of my week. Therefore, I highly recommend Laure if you're studying French as a beginner, an intermediate level or even if you would like to learn it as a hobby."
Audrey Stewart — IB French student, Kambala School, Sydney
"Almost a year and a half ago, I commenced French lessons with Laure because I desired to improve my academic ability and I have a deep interest in travel and global connection. Thus, I can testify to the excellence of Laure's classes, which are perfectly structured to cover all aspects of language learning. In each lesson, there is always the opportunity to engage in discussion about daily life. This has considerably improved my conversational French and ensured that classes are consistently engaging and often humorous. Laure also concentrates on reinforcing new vocabulary and grammar structures so that they become part of my long term memory. Entering my senior years as a student, a key criteria for valuable tutoring lessons is effective pacing. Laure achieves exactly this, optimising my time so that I rarely feel overwhelmed and conveniently conducting lessons online. I can converse with a native French speaker right from my desk at home! Laure further caters to my needs as a student by willingly providing feedback on school projects. Overall, our lessons have completely elevated my French skills and confidence."

IB French Tutor Kambala School — Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kambala offer IB French Ab Initio?
No — at Kambala, IB French is offered as French B at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) only. Ab Initio is not offered for French at Kambala, which means all IB French students are expected to have a prior foundation in the language. Our tutoring is tailored specifically to the French B SL and HL programme as taught at Kambala.
How long have you been working with Kambala School students?
We have been supporting IB French students at Kambala since 2011 — the year the IB Diploma Programme was introduced at the school. We are fully familiar with the school's approach to IB French, its curriculum expectations, and the specific demands of its assessment programme.
Can you help with the Extended Essay in French at HL?
Yes — we provide dedicated support for students writing their Extended Essay in French, from topic selection and planning through to drafting, revising, and final language accuracy. The Extended Essay is an important component of the IB core and benefits significantly from expert guidance on both content and language.
My daughter is shy about speaking French — can you help?
This is one of the most common concerns for Kambala parents. Many academically strong students struggle with the spontaneity required by the IB French oral exam. Our oral preparation focuses specifically on building confidence — through regular low-pressure speaking practice, structured oral simulations, and gradual exposure to examiner-style questions. Many students who came to us feeling anxious about the oral have gone on to achieve their strongest marks in that component.
Are lessons online or in person?
All lessons are delivered online via Zoom or Teams. This means students in Rose Bay and the surrounding Eastern Suburbs — Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse, Double Bay, Woollahra, Paddington, Randwick — can access expert IB French tuition without commuting. Lessons are available all year, including school holidays and after school hours.
How early should a Kambala student start IB French tutoring?
Ideally at the start of Year 11. The Individual Oral is typically assessed in Term 1 or 2 of Year 12, so oral preparation should begin well before the final year. An introductory session helps us assess the student's level and design the most effective plan for their timeline and specific exam components.
