Tips to help you pass your oral DELF B1 exam

In language tests, the oral test is often deemed to be the most difficult exercise.
Here are some explanation and tips to prepare for it.

The oral B1 is composed of three parts, all lasting about fifteen minutes. For the third and last part, you have ten minutes of preparation.

• Part 1: Guided interview (2 to 3 minutes)
• Part 2: Exercise in interaction (3 to 4 minutes)
• Part 3: Expression of a point of view (5 to 7 minutes)

1. Guided interview / l’entretien dirigé

This first exercise in oral production for level B1 is an interview conducted by an examiner.
In this part of the exam you will not have any preparation time and the test lasts two to three minutes, during which you simply have to talk about yourself and be spontaneous!
The examiner will ask you questions to guide the discussion and put you at ease.
Knowledge of the use of present, past and future tenses will be checked.
DELF B1 speaking topics can vary but generally cover everyday situations and common themes.

For this part of the B1 oral exam, you will need to structure and develop your answers to DELF B1 speaking questions by giving as much detail as possible and you will need to talk about yourself with confidence by giving information, reasons and explanations relating to your interests, your projects and what you do in your daily life.

2. Exercise in interaction / l’exercice en interaction

The interactive exercise lasts three to four minutes.
You have to solve a problem and you must propose solutions, negotiate or debate with the examiner.  Pay attention to the language register to use (“you” or “you”) depending on the situation.

You draw two subjects at random and you choose the one you prefer.Choose the subject that is easiest for you. Do not wait for the examiner to ask all the questions.

Here are some example scenarios :

• Vous voulez rendre un produit défectueux au magasin.
• Vous téléphonez pour réserver une chambre d’hôtel.
• Vous proposez une sortie à un ami, mais il hésite.
• Vous discutez avec un colocataire d’un problème de ménage.

• Vous êtes en retard pour un rendez-vous professionnel et vous expliquez la situation.
• Vous devez convaincre quelqu’un de venir à une fête.

These examples include both context and dialogue prompts, so you can practice or even role-play with a partner or your French tutor.

SITUATION 1: Rendre un produit défectueux

Contexte :
Vous avez acheté un casque audio il y a trois jours. Il ne fonctionne plus. Vous retournez au magasin pour demander un échange ou un remboursement.

Personnages :
→ Vous : Le client
→ L'autre personne : Le vendeur

Dialogue possible :

Client : Bonjour, je viens vous voir à propos d’un casque audio que j’ai acheté ici il y a trois jours.
Vendeur : Bonjour, quel est le problème exactement ?
Client : Il ne fonctionne plus du tout. Je l’ai utilisé une seule fois et depuis, il ne s’allume plus.
Vendeur : Avez-vous le ticket de caisse ?
Client : Oui, le voici.
Vendeur : Souhaitez-vous un échange ou un remboursement ?
Client : Un remboursement si possible, s’il vous plaît.
Vendeur : Très bien, je vais voir ce que je peux faire.

SITUATION 2: Organiser une sortie

Contexte :
Vous voulez proposer une sortie à un(e) ami(e) pour ce week-end, mais il/elle n’est pas très motivé(e). Il faut le/la convaincre.

Personnages :
→ Vous : Celui qui propose
→ L'autre personne : L’ami(e) hésitant(e)

Dialogue possible :

Vous : Salut ! Ça te dirait d’aller au cinéma ce week-end ?
Ami(e) : Je ne sais pas, je suis un peu fatigué(e) ces derniers temps.
Vous : Justement, ça te ferait du bien de sortir un peu. On peut aller voir ce nouveau film d’action dont tout le monde parle !
Ami(e) : Oui, mais il ne fait pas un peu trop de bruit ce genre de film ?
Vous : On peut choisir autre chose, un film plus calme. Et après, on pourrait aller boire un verre.
Ami(e) : Hmm… D’accord, pourquoi pas. Tu réserves les places ?
Vous : Bien sûr, je m’en occupe !

SITUATION 3: Réserver une chambre d’hôtel

Contexte :
Vous téléphonez à un hôtel pour réserver une chambre pour deux personnes pendant trois nuits.

Personnages :
→ Vous : Le client
→ L'autre personne : L’employé(e) de l’hôtel

Dialogue possible :

Vous : Bonjour, je voudrais réserver une chambre pour deux personnes, s’il vous plaît.
Employé : Bien sûr. Pour quelle date ?
Vous : Du 15 au 18 mai.
Employé : Vous préférez une chambre avec un lit double ou deux lits simples ?
Vous : Un lit double, s’il vous plaît.
Employé : Très bien. Souhaitez-vous le petit déjeuner inclus ?
Vous : Oui, c’est possible ?
Employé : Bien sûr, c’est 8 euros de plus par personne.
Vous : Parfait, je prends.
Employé : Très bien, puis-je avoir votre nom et votre numéro de téléphone ?
Vous : Oui, je m’appelle [votre nom], et mon numéro est le [numéro].
Employé : Merci, votre réservation est confirmée !

3. Expressing a point of view / le monologue suivi

The third part of this oral production lasts 5 to 7 minutes with 10 minutes of preparation.In this third part, you draw two subjects and you choose the one you prefer. You will have to present your opinion about it in the form of a personal oral presentation. After your monologue, the examiner may ask a few questions afterwards.

The expression of a point of view must be done by following a certain methodology.

1. Say hello to the examiner.
2. Introduce the topic: Summarize the big ideas.
3. Introduce the document: Use complete sentences to introduce the nature, source, author and year.
4. Announce your plan: Use connectives and the future simple.
5. Give your personal opinion with, arguments and counter-arguments.
6. Make a brief conclusion.
7. Invite the reviewer to ask you questions.

During preparation, only take notes. Give your point of view with personal examples, but you can also develop some examples from the articles. Finally, consider using linking words to structure your ideas.

Here's a full sample B1-level monologue suivi based on the following task:

Commerce de proximité ou grandes surfaces ? Avec la crise et l’augmenation du prix des carburants, les consommateurs s’interrogent de plus en plus sur la réalité des avantages à faire ses courses dans des grandes surfaces. Les grandes surfaces sont-elles synonymes d’économie ? Et vous, qu’en pensez-vous ? Préférez-vous les petits commerces prés de chez vous ou les grandes surfaces ?

Structure suggérée :

1. Introduction
2. Développement (2–3 arguments, exemples)
3. Conclusion personnelle

Exemple de production orale (B1 – monologue suivi) :

" Personnellement, je pense que les deux types de commerce ont des avantages et des inconvénients. Mais avec la crise économique et l’augmentation du prix des carburants, il est vrai que de plus en plus de gens réfléchissent à leur manière de consommer.

D’un côté, les grandes surfaces permettent de faire toutes ses courses au même endroit. On y trouve beaucoup de choix et souvent, les prix sont plus bas que dans les petits commerces. Cela peut vraiment aider les familles à faire des économies, surtout en période de crise.

Cependant, il faut souvent prendre la voiture pour y aller, ce qui n’est pas toujours pratique ni écologique. De plus, les grandes surfaces ne sont pas très bonnes pour l’économie locale. Elles peuvent faire disparaître les petits commerces de quartier.

À l’inverse, les commerces de proximité sont plus humains : on connaît les vendeurs, on peut discuter avec eux, poser des questions, et parfois même obtenir des conseils. Ils sont accessibles à pied, ce qui est pratique et bon pour l’environnement.

Pour ma part, j’essaie de faire un peu les deux. J’achète les produits frais – comme le pain, les fruits et légumes – chez les petits commerçants près de chez moi. Mais pour les produits ménagers ou en grande quantité, je vais parfois au supermarché.

En conclusion, je dirais qu’il est important de soutenir les commerces de proximité, mais aussi de faire attention à son budget. Trouver un équilibre entre les deux me semble être la meilleure solution."
