What does B2 level of French mean?

Bonjour!

Do you want to reach level B2 in French but you don't know what skills are required? In this article, we explain what French B2 is, what skills are needed across all four language abilities, and how it compares to other levels such as B1.

If you'd like guidance getting there, our DELF B2 courses offer personalised preparation tailored to your level and goals.

What is level B2 in French?

Level B2 corresponds to the 4th level of the CEFR – the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is a standardized system used to assess and describe language proficiency in various languages, including French. The CEFR is divided into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, with A1 being the lowest and C2 the highest.

Level B2 is that of an independent user — often described in English as the upper-intermediate level. It's a very good level, and the level at which many people start to consider themselves fluent in French. A B2 student is able to understand press articles on current issues and can communicate spontaneously with a native French speaker.

In France, B2 is also the level targeted by the Baccalauréat for foreign languages, and it is the level most commonly required for admission to French and international universities, as well as for many professional roles in French-speaking environments — from tourism and hospitality to translation and customer service.

If you are coming from B1 and wondering how big the gap really is, see our detailed guide: DELF B1 vs B2 — Key Differences, Levels & Which to Choose.

To find out if you have reached B2, you can take different tests and exams. The best known is the DELF B2, an official exam recognized worldwide which allows you, for example, to enroll in a French university without taking a further language test. You can also take the TCF, the French Knowledge Test.

Comprehension and expression at French B2 level

B2 level students have very good comprehension and production skills, both orally and in writing. Mastery of a foreign language is measured through 4 skills: oral comprehension, written comprehension, oral expression and written expression.

  • Listening comprehension: understand the main ideas of complex audio materials on concrete and abstract topics, and follow extended speech and complex arguments, provided the subject matter is reasonably familiar and clearly structured.
  • Written comprehension: quickly identify important information in a long and complex text. Even without understanding every detail, learners can grasp all the relevant arguments.
  • Oral expression: express yourself clearly and with argument on many subjects — for example, giving your opinion on a current topic or presenting the advantages and disadvantages of an issue. See typical DELF B2 speaking topics for examples.
  • Written expression: produce clear and detailed texts, for example to defend a point of view on subjects relating to your interests or to social issues. For a full breakdown including a model answer, see the DELF B2 writing test guide.

What can you do at French B2 level?

Here is what reaching B2 looks like in everyday terms:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics — including technical discussions related to your field.
  • Interact with native speakers naturally and spontaneously, without major strain on either side.
  • Express and justify your opinions in discussions and debates, giving advantages and disadvantages on current issues.
  • Write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects, including argumentative essays.
  • Use common idiomatic expressions and adapt your register between formal and informal French.

What you won't yet have at B2 is the ease to catch every nuance, implicit meaning, or fast native banter — that level of fluency comes with C1.

French B2 level vocabulary

French B2 students have a wide range of vocabulary, and are able to:

  • Use an extensive vocabulary to talk about common topics and more complex subjects such as society, culture, and politics.
  • Use specialized vocabulary in their field of study or work, although some gaps may remain in very technical areas.
  • Understand and use common idiomatic expressions and turns of phrase.
  • Adapt their language according to context, using both formal and informal registers.
  • Choose words accurately to express complex and abstract ideas.
  • Use logical connectors and linking words effectively to structure speech coherently. See our guide to French connectors for the essentials.

French B2 Grammar and pronunciation

The French B2 attests to a good mastery of grammar and pronunciation. To reach level B2, you need solid grammatical foundations — including the main grammatical tools such as prepositions — and the ability to use complex constructions such as concession. Minor mistakes which don't interfere with communication are acceptable.

Concerning pronunciation, B2-level students must:

  • Have clear and intelligible pronunciation, even if some minor errors remain.
  • Use appropriate emphasis and intonation to express meaning and emotion, including in interrogative, declarative, and exclamatory sentences.
  • Distinguish and correctly reproduce specific French sounds, including nasal vowels and consonants.
  • Use the natural rhythm of French and the connection between words (liaisons) for fluid speech.

In summary, you can have a B2 in oral comprehension but a B1 level in written expression. Assessing French skills is not an exact science — everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses!

Frequently Asked Questions About French B2 Level

Is B2 a good level of French to have?

Yes — B2 is the "independent user" level on the CEFR scale. It allows you to study at a French university without a language test, work confidently in a French-speaking environment, and follow news, films, and conversations on a wide range of topics.

How long does it take to reach B2 level in French?

From a solid B1, most learners need around 3 to 6 months of focused preparation, depending on study intensity. See our detailed guide: How long does it take to prepare for DELF B2?

Is French B2 level enough for French citizenship?

From 1 January 2026, B2 is the minimum level required for French naturalisation applications. Read our full guide: DELF B2 for French citizenship.

Is B2 French considered fluent?

B2 is often where real fluency begins in practice — you can hold conversations, work in French, and follow most media without major difficulty. Officially, though, CEFR reserves "proficient" for C1 and C2, so B2 is better described as confident, independent fluency with some remaining gaps in nuance and specialised vocabulary.

What is the difference between French B2 and C1 level?

B2 is "independent" — you can argue a point and follow complex discussions. C1 is "proficient" — you handle nuance, humour, and implicit meaning with near-native fluency. Most professional and academic contexts only require B2.

Real Results: What Our B2 Students Say

Nothing illustrates the journey to B2 better than hearing from students who've made it.

" Our 14-year-old son, Calder, had good French language ability, but didn't know where to find support or how to prepare for the DELF B2. He was lost. Only seven weeks before the exam, we contacted Laure for help. She quickly conducted an analysis and delivered an honest assessment of his strengths and weaknesses. She believed, if he really applied himself, he would "most-likely" pass the exam. Therefore, she developed a specific and targeted plan to get him to pass. And over the seven weeks he worked hard on both his online tutoring with Laure and the offline lessons she prepared for him. The plan worked! He passed the B2. He absolutely would not have passed without her. That is not hyperbole. Calder would be the first to tell you that. Laure is a very talented and experienced professional; it shows in her work and abilities. We are ever grateful – and lucky - that we found her. We could not recommend her more. "

" I was looking for last-minute help to score a B2 on the DELF French exam for University. I had only about a month or two before my exam and Laure was able to help me attain the B2 score. Her teaching skills were fantastic and I really noticed great improvement after every session. If you are interested in learning French, especially for any French exams, Laure is the professor for you. She not only helped me pass my exam but also helped me improve my French proficiency. I was looking to just pass the DELF exam but Laure made sure I received a good score. I scored an 81/100 and a perfect score in French which wouldn't have been possible without her tutoring. Overall, Laure is a great teacher and I couldn't have received my B2 score without her. "

Chloé Gratson, Sophomore
(DELF B2) McGill University - Montreal, 2024

" Achieving a pass grade on the DELF B2 examination was a prerequisite for my doctoral program. Having spent half a decade studying French in a North American high school, I was confident that self-study would suffice. However, the reality was more challenging than anticipated, and I found myself floundering on my first attempt with a disappointing score in the 40s. That's when I enlisted the help of Laure. With her in-depth expertise and professional demeanor, she swiftly discerned my weak points and devised an astute, targeted plan to help me overcome them. Her assignments were also well curated to improve my skills and rigorous enough to have me studying 7 hours a week to keep up. Although I hesitated initially at the cost, her lessons showed me that it was well worth it. In just eleven sessions, Laure remarkably helped me boost my score by approximately 30 points, culminating in a pass mark of 71.5 at my second attempt. My primary obstacle was my speaking ability, a skill I hadn't had the chance to hone in years. I also struggled with key grammatical structures vital for the exam. Laure didn't merely teach me how to succeed in the DELF exam, but she also substantially elevated my overall French language proficiency. Should I dare to take on the DELF C1 exam, I would unquestionably reach out to Laure without a second thought. For anyone endeavoring to excel in a French language examination or aspiring to enhance their French speaking abilities, Laure can definitely help."

Yuri Han, PhD student
(DELF B2) Seoul, South Korea, 2022/2023

" Laure has been an absolutely incredible teacher, and I've passed my B2 with 92%! That is a fantastic improvement on my mark in the B1, done prior to our lessons. I get a huge amount of practice in all areas in the lesson, and we did plenty of mock exams of all types. After the session I promptly receive a list of vocab I couldn't remember or didn't know, words I mispronounced and really good homework focused on issues that came up in the lesson or things I have asked to work on. I'm continuing with lessons even after the exam, which really speaks volumes about how much I enjoy them, and I'm so delighted to now be able to tackle novels I previously had to give up on. I've really seen a huge improvement in my French, and crucially also in my confidence with the language. With plenty of encouragement and a huge amount of skill, Laure has helped me exceed my expectations! "

Katherine Rybacki, Researcher
(DELF B2) Geneva, Switzerland, 2021/2022

" Laure is an excellent teacher not only because she knows very well the material, but also because she is extremely well organised. During the lessons, Laure gives you the confidence to talk, and she also spots the parts that need more attention. In this way, she provides students with enough material to practice and improve. Due to my working schedule, I decided to take online lessons. I was very hesitant at the beginning, but my experience with Laure has been excellent! I have never taken any additional lessons, and I only watch tv in French from time to time. With Laure, I passed the DELF B2. "
