What Is the DELF?
The DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are official French language diplomas issued by the French Ministry of National Education. They are recognised internationally and valid for life.
Certifications are available across six levels:
- A1 and A2 — elementary level
- B1 and B2 — independent level
- C1 and C2 — proficient level
At each level, four skills are assessed: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Not sure which level is right for you? Read our articles on the differences between DELF A2 and B1 and the differences between DELF B1 and B2. We can also assess your level and advise you on the most appropriate exam based on your goals and timeline.
DELF in Paris — Why Take the Exam?
Taking the DELF in Paris offers a unique advantage: you are preparing for an exam in the very city where the French language and culture are most alive. Daily immersion complements your structured preparation in a way that is simply not possible elsewhere.
There are many reasons to take the DELF in Paris:
For professionals:
The DELF is recognised by employers worldwide and can be decisive for career advancement in a French-speaking environment. It demonstrates a certified, objective level of French proficiency — something increasingly required in Paris's international workplace. Discover our Business French courses if you are also looking to strengthen your professional French.
For students:
The DELF opens doors to French universities and grandes écoles. La Sorbonne, for example, requires a C1 level for many programmes. Many international schools in Paris also incorporate the DELF junior into their curriculum.
For expatriates:
Living in Paris means the language surrounds you every day. The DELF gives structure and direction to your learning — and a recognised certificate to show for it. Read our guide on how to learn French effectively in Paris for expert tips on combining immersion with structured tuition.
For French citizenship:
Since January 2026, a B2 level is officially required for all French naturalisation applications. Read our complete guide on DELF B2 courses for French citizenship to understand what is required and how to prepare.
DELF B2 in Paris and French Naturalisation 2026
Since January 2026, the French government requires proof of B2-level French proficiency for all naturalisation applications. This is a significant change from the previous B1 requirement.
You have three officially recognised options:
- DELF B2 — a lifetime diploma, the most popular choice
- TCF IRN — valid for 2 years, designed specifically for citizenship applications
- TEF IRN — also valid for 2 years
Not sure what B2 French level means? Read our guide. We also offer a dedicated French B2 citizenship programme with two tailored modules — accelerated and regular — both including mock exams, personalised feedback and lesson summaries.
Where to Take the DELF in Paris?
The DELF and DALF exams can be taken worldwide, including in Paris. The accredited examination centre for adults in Paris is:
Alliance Française de Paris 101 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris
Please note that according to the feedback from many students, DELF examiners in Paris have a reputation for being more demanding than those overseas. Thorough, structured preparation is therefore especially important if you are sitting the exam in Paris.
The Alliance Française de Paris offers several exam sessions per year. You can register directly on their website.
DELF A2 in Paris
The DELF A2 is an ideal first official certification for adults and children who have been learning French for a few months and want to validate their progress. In Paris, it is particularly relevant for expatriates who have recently arrived and want to demonstrate a basic level of French proficiency — whether for personal satisfaction, a visa application, or enrolment in a French school.
At French via Skype, we have supported many students in Paris in preparing for the DELF A2 — including complete beginners who achieved excellent results in a short period of time. Read our article on the differences between DELF A2 and B1 to understand what is expected at each level. Discover our DELF A2 preparation course.
DELF B1 in Paris
The DELF B1 is the level of an independent French speaker — someone who can handle most everyday situations, express opinions, and communicate with confidence in both professional and social contexts. In Paris, it is often required for certain long-stay visa applications and residency permits, and is a popular target for expatriates who have been living in France for one to two years.
Preparing for the DELF B1 in Paris is particularly effective thanks to the immersive environment of the city — but structured preparation remains essential to succeed. Not sure how long it takes to prepare for the DELF B1? Read our detailed guide. Our lessons cover all four skills — and our students consistently score 80% or above. Discover our DELF B1 preparation course.
DELF B2 in Paris — French Citizenship and Professional Integration
The DELF B2 is by far the most sought-after level for students in Paris in 2026. Since January 2026, it is an official requirement for all French naturalisation applications — making it an essential step for anyone planning to apply for French citizenship.
At B2 level, candidates must be able to understand complex texts, argue clearly and fluently, and interact spontaneously with native speakers. The oral exam in particular — which includes a monologue suivi and a debate — requires targeted preparation. Read our guides on DELF B2 speaking topics, how to prepare for the DELF B2, and DELF B2 courses for French citizenship.
We also offer a dedicated French B2 citizenship programme with two tailored modules — accelerated and regular. Not sure what B2 French level means? Read our guide. Discover our DELF B2 preparation course.
DALF C1 in Paris
The DALF C1 is an advanced certification aimed at students and professionals who need to demonstrate a high level of French proficiency — for admission to a French university, for a demanding professional role, or simply to reach near-native fluency. La Sorbonne and many other prestigious French institutions require a C1 level for admission.
The DALF C1 is significantly more demanding than the DELF B2 — it requires the ability to understand complex, extended discourse, produce detailed and well-argued written texts, and engage in sophisticated oral interactions. Preparation is therefore more intensive and requires a longer timeline. Discover our DALF C1 preparation course.

What Our Students in Paris Say
" I began my lesson with Laure about a year ago. I had learnt some basic French. I wanted to restart my learning and toward DELF exam. Prior to it, I struggle to understand conversations or form the sentences properly. My oral conversation is my weaker link. Laure identifies the gap and structure our lesson accordingly. She helps me to prepare DELF A1 with lot of focus on my weaker area of oral conversation, and also improved my writing skills. I have improved tremendously and I aced my DELF exam with flying colours. Overall, I find her lessons to be of premier customised quality. She keeps me motived to continue learning at a suited pace. I highly recommend Laure's lessons. “
Karrish Tan, Senior revenue accountant
(DELF A2)
" Having studied French for several years in high school, I took up re-learning the language and preparing for the DELF after my undergraduate medical studies to maintain my connection and interest with the French culture. Laure was fantastic as a teacher and mentor during this experience, and was a highly supportive, encouraging and engaging teacher. Her lessons were structured around the exam topics in such a way that I could not have felt better prepared going in. On a personal note, her flexibility to reorganise certain lessons around my work schedule, as well as her weekly homework tasks to keep our knowledge and learning to the highest standards were highlights of working and learning with her, making for a very enjoyable and smooth studying experience alongside working full-time. I was able to pass my DELF B1 exam despite being out of touch with the language for over 7 years prior to Laure's lesson- a true testament to her ability as a teacher, and would have no doubt recommending her to future students as one of the best options to prepare for your DELF exam, irrespective of your level! "
Dr Abhi Shekhsrinivas
(DELF B1)
" Laure has been an absolutely incredible teacher, and I’ve passed my B2 with 92%! That is a fantastic improvement on my mark in the B1, done prior to our lessons. I get a huge amount of practice in all areas in the lesson, and we did plenty of mock exams of all types. After the session I promptly receive a list of vocab I couldn’t remember or didn’t know, words I mispronounced and really good homework focused on issues that came up in the lesson or things I have asked to work on. I’m continuing with lessons even after the exam, which really speaks volumes about how much I enjoy them, and I’m so delighted to now be able to tackle novels I previously had to give up on. I’ve really seen a huge improvement in my French, and crucially also in my confidence with the language. With plenty of encouragement and a huge amount of skill, Laure has helped me exceed my expectations! "
Katherine Rybacki, Researcher
(DELF B2)
" Laure is an Exceptional French Teacher
I had the absolute pleasure of working with Laure to prepare for the DELF B1 exam, and I can confidently say that she played a key role in my success. From the very first lesson, Laure demonstrated not only a deep understanding of the French language but also a remarkable talent for teaching it in a way that was clear, engaging, and perfectly tailored to my level and learning style.
What sets Laure apart from other teachers is her ability to make each session both productive and enjoyable. She has a calm, encouraging approach that immediately put me at ease, even when tackling tricky grammar points or practicing oral expression—my biggest challenge. Her lessons were always well-structured, combining conversation practice, listening exercises, vocabulary building, and mock exam questions that mirrored the real test format.
Laure was also incredibly attentive to my progress. She gave thoughtful, constructive feedback and offered practical tips for improving not just my language skills but also my confidence. Thanks to her guidance, I felt fully prepared going into the exam and achieved a score I’m really proud of!
If you're looking for a skilled, supportive, and genuinely inspiring French teacher, I can’t recommend Laure highly enough. She’s an outstanding instructor who truly cares about her students’ success."
